Many companies share performance metrics with their teams to keep everyone “in the know.” While many of these metrics are excellent indicators of past performance, they do little to provide the state of the company in real-time.

One of my favourite questions is, “Are you winning?” To answer that question requires an employee’s ability to gauge their performance at that very moment in time. What are your immediate measures?

Four simple rules of engagement are as follows:

  1. Attendance: work your scheduled shift
  2. Safety 1st: Wear your PPE, don’t put yourself in harm’s way, and NEVER compromise or bypass the safety features of your machine. Follow lockout/tag-out protocols and practices.
  3. Quality: Zero Defects.
  4. Run @ Rate: Meet your production targets.

A simple “Yes” tells us everything we need to know. If the macro metrics are aligned with the targets you’ve set for your team, they will serve to confirm the standards where they matter most, on your production floor.

Team members know they’re winning at any moment in time and it’s a great feeling to know you’ve had a great day even if the charts haven’t been posted yet.
